Candice Breitz ‘King (A portrait of Michael Jackson)’ 2005

Mashup of footage taken from Candice Breitz’s installation King (A portrait of Michael Jackson) 2005 with the original recording of ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson. In Breitz’s installation, Jackson himself is never heard. He is embodied through the collective performance of his fans. Jackson comes to function as an accumulative interpretation of those who consume his music; the installation is at once a portrait of the late performer via the collective performance of his fans, and a mediated performance of each of the fans through the persona of Jackson.
