The figure of the fan is at the centre of our culture of consumption and comes to personify one of the epic struggles defining global capitalism: the struggle between a culture which is mass-marketed, globally-distributed, and profit-driven on the one hand, and, on the other, the attempts of the individual consumer of this culture to make meaning out of it in relation to his/her local and particular experience of the world. The question for the fan is to what extent it might be possible to transform the moment of passive consumption into one of active production.
