Adel Abdessemed in conversation with Gareth Harris

Gareth Harris: Do you consider yourself French or Algerian? Your heritage evidently plays a part in your art.

Adel Abdessemed: In the late 1960s Jannis Kounellis said: ‘I am a Greek man but an Italian artist.’

Harris: So nationality is an issue?

Abdessemed: I am not talking about nationality. Nationality is already innate, it doesn’t have to be destroyed, it has to be widened. For me, a good artist is tormented by the world, acting inside a global social sphere.
